Both articles address topics very focused in the media over the past
week, with the main story centered on the Royal family – specifically with the
Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They announced they have decided to ‘step back’
from the Royal family, causing outrage from many – worlwide. By having this as
the main article addresses the audience’s cultural competency and whether they
already knew about this, however it will probably be providing information for
most people as newspapers are what a lot of their audience would read in the
mornings.
This links to Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications theory by
educating them on these topics.
Weight Watchers advert, many people start the new year dieting as a
‘resolution’ so this is able to address the audience by providing them with
something beneficial to them, and possibly being a reason for them to buy the
newspaper. Also with the advert being bright and with ‘FREE PULLOUT’ at the top
would attract a lot of people more, drawing their attention to it.
Article about Boris Johnson reflects the Daily Mail’s right winged views
by giving nothing negative about him but speaking about how he was trying to
help the situation with Iran.
Main headline is quite simple and straight forward, which is common of the Daily Mail comparing to the Guardian which normally have formal and longer headlines.
